Parks Ad-Hoc Committee update, discussion, and actions pertaining to the identification of a parks issue to present to City Council

Body
RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Youth Commission narrow the scope of the parks issue and create a proposal to submit to City Council.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Youth Commission has identified parks as an important issue for the youth of the City of Fresno. Program Coordinator Espinoza has invited the City of Fresno PARCs Department to present before the Commission. The purpose of the presentation is to inform the Commission as it deliberates and narrows the scope of its proposal to City Council.

The Youth Commission has held various public meetings where the Commissioners have conducted several capacity building trainings and discussions in order to identify the issues that currently affect the youth of the City of Fresno. In addition, the Commissioners have conducted surveys with the youth of their respective districts in order to ascertain the needs of youth. The results of the surveys have been shared and discussed during the public meetings.

At the March 8, 2019 meeting, the Commission narrowed down the issues it wanted to explore to four issues: streets/crosswalks, pollution, violence, and parks. At the March 22, 2019 meeting, the Commission voted to work on the issue of parks.

At the June 7, 2019 Youth Commission meeting, Kristina Chamberlin, Assistant Director of the PARCs Department made a presentation to the Youth Commission in relation to the City's parks and the Parks Master Plan.
