RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that City Council adopt the 43rd amendment to the Annual Appropriation Resolution (AAR) No. 2023-185 appropriating $50,000 in the Solid Waste Recycling Fund to launch an outreach campaign to help educate the public on proper handling and disposal of Household Hazardous Wastes.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) has awarded $50,000 in grant funding to the City of Fresno Department of Public Utilities Solid Waste Management Division. The grant funds will be used within the existing household hazardous waste (HHW) collection program to expand public education targeted community education on the proper handling and disposal of HHW materials. The grant period is December 2023 through February 26, 2027.

BACKGROUND

CalRecycle offers the HHW Grant Program pursuant to Section 47200(a) of the Public Resources Code. The purpose of the grant is to assist local governments in implementing safe HHW programs, which may include public education, source reduction, reuse, recycling, load checking, and collection components.
