EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The PARCS Department is seeking grant funding from the California Coastal Conservancy to provide recreational trips and experiences at the California Coast to older adults living in the City of Fresno.

BACKGROUND

The California Coastal Conservancy released the Explore the Coast 2025 funding cycle on November 14, 2024. If awarded, the approximately 3-year-long grant term would begin in January 2026 and end in late 2028. The California Coastal Conservancy has $650,000 available to award for the 2025 Explore the Coast funding cycle to support projects that facilitate and enhance the public's opportunities to explore California's coast. The maximum grant request per agency is $100,000. Grant applications are due January 24, 2025.

The Explore the Coast grant program seeks to provide coastal experiences for people and communities who face challenges or barriers to accessing or enjoying the coast, including low-income individuals and people with disabilities. Explore the Coast supports projects that meet the following program priorities: 1) Provides an enjoyable and/or healing experience at the coast, and 2) Reduces economic, physical, operational, or societal barriers to accessing or enjoying the coast. Secondary program priorities include inspiring coastal stewardship, promoting community leadership, and providing lasting positive impact.

The grant proposal will include a series of interactive, recreational trips to the coast for older adults who live in the City of Fresno. Trips will be planned and led by PARCS staff and will feature opportunities for participants to access and enjoy the beach and coastline, including a focus on enabling beach and coastal access for participants with mobility barriers.
