SUBJECT

Title

RESOLUTION - Renaming the Pinedale Community Center the “Paula S. Guzman Pinedale Community Center”

Body

RECOMMENDATIONS

It is recommended the Council finds it necessary and appropriate in renaming the Pinedale Community Center at 7170 N San Pablo Avenue the “Paula S. Guzman Pinedale Community Center”.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The City of Fresno owns the Pinedale Community Center at 7170 N San Pablo Avenue in the community of Pinedale. The Pinedale Community Association has expressed interest in renaming the facility in honor of Paula S. Guzman, former businesswoman and lifelong Pinedale advocate.

BACKGROUND

Paula S. Guzman (1928-2016) moved with her husband “Guz” to Pinedale in 1947. Together they operated National Hardware and Lumber Co., now named National Hardware Supply and lived in the community her entire life.

Paula was a pioneer and lifelong advocate in education. Starting her educational career in 1951, Paula had many firsts in Fresno-area schools, and continued her service in education even after retiring in 1975. She continued to help local schools and students by providing educational materials and scholarships through various organizations, and was an active member of numerous boards and commissions.

The Pinedale Community Association, which exists largely due to Paula’s community activism, consists of local residents, business, local groups, and government agencies, continues to meet on a regular basis to coordinate the needs and help serve the residents of Pinedale. The PCA, along with many other meetings and activities, are held at the Pinedale Community Center, which is owned by the City of Fresno and administered by Fresno PARCS.

Pinedale will be celebrating the 95th anniversary of their founding this March, with many of the activities taking place at the Pinedale Community Center.
