RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended the City Council authorize the Chief of Police to accept the SORNA grant award of $25,000 from the California Department of Justice, adopt Annual Appropriation Resolution No. 2016-118 appropriating $25,000 for the 2016 Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act into the FY 2017 budget, and authorize the Chief of Police to execute the agreement and all related documents applicable to the SORNA Grant.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The California Department of Justice has awarded $25,000 in grant funding to the Fresno Police Department to provide equipment and training for the PC 290 Unit to enhance their capabilities to register and track convicted sex offenders. The grant period will begin on January 24, 2017 and conclude on May 15, 2017.

BACKGROUND

The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) grant is funded from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) through the California Department of Justice Sex Offender Registry Office. This grant was designed to augment current Sex Registrant programs within cities in California.
