RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends Council approve the first amendment to the agreement between the City of Fresno and SCCCD to continue acceptance of the SCCCD issued identification cards for access on the FAX fixed-route buses and authorize the Director of Transportation or designee to execute the amendment.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

With the installation of automated fare collection equipment, FAX has the opportunity to accept various types of fare media. One of these is the agency issued magnetic strip identification cards. These cards can be used by Fresno City College and Clovis Community College students, faculty, and staff to swipe their ID cards at the farebox for fare payment. FAX bills the agency monthly for all rides provided at a rate of $1.10 per ride. This rate is equivalent to a 12 percent discount off the regular fare and is the same cost as purchasing bulk single-ride tickets. The original agreement was for one year.

BACKGROUND

In 2013, FAX installed SPX Genfare Odyssey fareboxes capable of accepting various new fare media, including magnetic strip cards, which are used on various ID cards. The original demonstration project for this technology was with Fresno State University in 2014. The project was a success and was rolled out to SCCCD in 2017 allowing students, faculty, and staff from both Fresno City College and Clovis Community College to swipe their ID cards at the farebox for payment.
