RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends Council approve the Second Amendment to the agreement between the City of Fresno and State Center Community College District (SCCCD), extending the term of the agreement to provide transit services for SCCCD students, faculty, and staff on Fresno Area Express (FAX) fixed-route buses until June 30, 2020, and authorize the Director of Transportation or designee to execute the Second Amendment.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The proposed Second Amendment would extend the term of the City's agreement with SCCCD for an additional year beyond the extension approved with the First Amendment. Under this agreement, SCCCD- issued magnetic strip identification cards can be used by Fresno City College and Clovis Community College students, faculty, and staff at the FAX bus farebox for payment. FAX bills the agency monthly for all rides provided at a rate of $1.10 per ride. This rate is equivalent to a 12 percent discount off the regular fare and is the same cost as buying bulk tokens.

BACKGROUND

In 2013, FAX installed SPX Genfare Odyssey Fareboxes capable of accepting various new fare media, including magnetic strip cards, which are used on various ID cards. The original demonstration project for this technology was with Fresno State University in 2014.
