RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the City Council approve the joint resolution supporting the 144th Fighter Wing and securing a next-generation aircraft squadron, thus ensuring the California Air National Guard continues to make Fresno Yosemite International Airport its home.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The City of Fresno is home to the California Air National Guard's 144th Fighter Wing. The United States Air Force has identified multiple locations to house a squadron of next generation F-15EX or F-35 aircraft. Several factors position the 144th Fighter Wing as the best option for the advanced aircraft, most importantly its alignment with the National Defense Strategy priorities and its strategic location allowing the protection of the nation's West Coast.
As California's fifth-largest city, Fresno has created an environment that provides thriving career opportunities and economic mobility to residents and businesses alike. The 144th Fighter Wing continues to invest in our community, with an economic impact of nearly $160 million, including $94.1 million in military and civilian wages. With 1,106 military and civilian personnel, the 144th Fighter Wing remains one of Fresno's most valued employers.
As the current F-15C/D aircraft near the end of its service life, the next generation of F-15EX or F-35 will sustain the ongoing mission of the 144th Fighter Wing. It is vital that the City take every step possible to ensure the 144th Fighter Wing acquires one of the new aircraft and ...
