RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the council authorize the Chief of Police to enter into a cooperative purchase agreement with Motorola Solutions to purchase Motorola APX 8000 all-band portable police radios and related accessories in an amount not to exceed $220,000 for use by the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) and other specialized tactical units.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Currently, the Fresno Police Department SWAT Team is using portable radios made by Harris Communications. The radios were purchased in January 2011 through the Public Safety Interoperability Communications (PSIC) grant program and originally purchased for the multi-band capability should there be an emergency need for a multi-agency operation. It is necessary for allied agencies to have the capability to communicate with one another in the event of an emergency such as a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or special tactical operation. As the largest metropolitan agency in Central California, the Fresno Police Department SWAT Team requires the ability to communicate in real time with our partner local, state and federal agencies.
